From Chandigarh, it's 260 km and takes 7–8 hours. Mountain roads are narrow, with hairpin bends and occasional fog or snow in winter.
If you're an experienced driver comfortable with hills, self-driving is rewarding. If you're new to mountain driving, consider taking a bus to Aut and hiring a local taxi for the final climb. The Aut–Jibhi stretch is the most challenging part of the journey.

Car rental services in Delhi include Zoomcar, Revv, and local operators. Hatchbacks (Swift, i20) cost ₹2,500–₹3,500 per day. SUVs (Ertiga, Innova) cost ₹4,000–₹6,000 per day. Book 3–5 days in advance for weekend travel. Check fuel policy — most rentals come with a full tank and require return with the same fuel level.
For mountain roads, SUVs are recommended for better ground clearance and handling on rough patches. Hatchbacks work but require careful driving. Ensure your rental has valid insurance for hill driving. Some operators restrict hill travel — confirm before booking.
Route from Delhi: Road conditions
Delhi to Chandigarh (NH44): 4–5 hours, generally good highway. Chandigarh to Mandi (NH205/NH154): 3–4 hours, decent roads with some construction zones. Mandi to Aut (NH3): 1–2 hours, good highway. Aut to Jibhi (Banjar road): 1.5–2 hours, narrow mountain road with hairpin bends.
Total distance: ~500 km. Total time: 10–12 hours including breaks. Start by 4–5 AM to avoid Delhi traffic and reach Jibhi before dark. The Aut–Jibhi stretch is the most challenging — narrow, with blind curves and occasional livestock on the road. Drive slowly, use horn at blind turns.

Chandigarh to Mandi (NH205/NH154): 3–4 hours, decent roads. Mandi to Aut (NH3): 1–2 hours, good highway. Aut to Jibhi (Banjar road): 1.5–2 hours, narrow mountain road with hairpin bends.
Total distance: ~260 km. Total time: 7–8 hours including breaks. Start by 6–7 AM to reach Jibhi before dark. The route is shorter than Delhi but has the same challenging Aut–Jibhi final stretch. Fog can occur on the Chandigarh–Mandi section in winter mornings.
Fuel costs and stops
Fuel cost estimate: ₹2,500–₹3,500 for the round trip from Delhi (500 km each way). From Chandigarh: ₹1,500–₹2,000 round trip (260 km each way). Petrol prices are higher in Himachal than Delhi/Chandigarh — fill up in Chandigarh or Mandi for better rates.
Recommended fuel stops: Chandigarh (fill up here), Mandi (top up if needed), Aut (last reliable fuel before Jibhi). Jibhi has limited fuel options — don't rely on filling up in the village. Carry extra fuel in a jerrycan if you're concerned about availability.
Mountain driving tips
Drive slowly on the Aut–Jibhi stretch. Use horn at blind curves. Yield to uphill traffic. Don't overtake on hairpin bends. In winter, carry tire chains and check weather before attempting Jalori Pass. In monsoon, drive slowly on slippery roads and avoid night driving in the hills.
Parking is available at Rustic Jibhi. If you're not planning to drive during your stay, the car can stay parked — mountain roads are not ideal for casual driving. Most guests prefer to use local taxis for day trips to Jalori Pass or Chehni Kothi.
