Travelling safely in monsoon and winter

Monsoon (roughly July to mid-September)

  • Heavy rain can bring landslides that close a stretch of road for a few hours. The Mandi–Aut section is where most delays happen.
  • Travel in daylight, keep a few hours of slack in your plans, and avoid driving the hill roads after dark.
  • If heavy-rain warnings are out for Mandi or Kullu district, it is wiser to postpone.
  • Keep your phone charged and a rain jacket in your day bag, not the luggage hold.

Winter (roughly December to February)

  • The road from Aut to Jibhi usually stays open, but the stretch above Jibhi towards Shoja and Jalori Pass can carry snow and ice.
  • Jalori Pass can close after heavy snow, often from around mid-December to March; dates vary every year.
  • Shaded bends can hold black ice in the early morning even on clear days. Chains may be needed above Jibhi.
  • Fog on the plains can slow the overnight bus from Delhi, so plan nothing time-sensitive for your arrival morning.
