January is peak winter in Himachal, with possible snow at higher elevations and crisp cold days. Jibhi sits at 2,200–2,300 metres elevation, where winter is cold but usually accessible.
January in Delhi and Chandigarh means dense fog, smog, and grey skies. Jibhi offers clear mountain air, possible snow, and starry nights. This is when you see the valley in its quietest form — fewer tourists, frozen waterfalls, and the chance of snowfall if you're lucky.
Route from Delhi: overnight bus or self-drive
From Delhi, the overnight Volvo to Aut is standard. HRTC and private operators like Zingbus and Laxmi Holidays run nightly buses from Kashmiri Gate and Majnu Ka Tilla for ₹1,100–₹1,500. The journey takes 10–12 hours. January fog can delay buses — buffer extra time. From Aut, shared taxis to Jibhi cost ₹1,500–₹1,800 for the 1.5-hour climb.
Self-driving from Delhi is roughly 500 km and takes 10–12 hours via NH44 to Chandigarh, then NH205/NH154 to Mandi, NH3 to Aut, and the Banjar road. January fog on the plains can slow the first few hours. Start by 4 AM to avoid Delhi fog and reach Jibhi before dark. Carry chains if driving in snow conditions.
Route from Chandigarh: winter drive
Chandigarh to Jibhi is roughly 260 km and takes 7–8 hours by car in winter conditions. The route follows NH205 and NH154 towards Mandi, then NH3 to Aut. After the Aut tunnel, take the right turn towards Banjar/Jibhi. January can bring fog on the plains and possible snow at higher elevations.
Private taxis cost ₹5,000–₹7,000 one way. HRTC and private Volvo buses run from ISBT Sector 43 towards Kullu/Manali. Drop at Aut and catch a local bus or taxi to Jibhi. Total journey time by bus: 9–10 hours including winter delays.

Things to do during winter weekend
Jalori Pass may have snow in January. Check locally before attempting the drive — the pass sits at 3,120 metres and can close temporarily after snowfall. If Jalori is accessible, the Serolsar Lake trek becomes a winter wonderland walk. If the pass is closed, local village walks and the Jibhi waterfall (frozen or flowing) are excellent alternatives.
Winter is perfect for slow café days, reading, and short daylight walks. Pack serious layers — thermal inners, fleece, windproof jacket, warm hat, gloves, and sturdy shoes with grip. Evenings are for bonfires, music, and community dinners. Republic Day itself is quiet in Jibhi — no parades, just mountain air and possibly snow.
